Our Pride and Joy

Walnut Hill Church has been dedicated to the spiritual formation of our children and families since the very beginning.

Our children are our pride and joy and we cannot overstate how much we treasure having them with us in worship and in community. We believe that nurturing faith in young hearts is one of the most important things we can do, which is why we have intentional programs in place for our youngest members. Our children’s ministries are led by a dedicated Coordinator of Christian Education, and our nursery is staffed by CPR-trained care workers so that parents can worship with confidence and peace of mind.

Please read more about our programs below and contact Hope Horman, Coordinator of Christian Education, with any questions.

Infants + Toddlers

Nursery care is available for infants and toddlers, provided by at least two college-aged adults who are CPR-trained, background checked, and employed by the church year round. The nursery is located in Trinity Hall, next to the Sanctuary, and is filled with a range of age-appropriate toys, books, games, and art supplies (our nursery is shown at left). Parents are encouraged to bring their children to the nursery before worship service begins (10:45AM) or at any point during worship as needed. For more information about our nursery or to talk about how we can make drop off easier for your family, please contact Coordinator of Christian Education, Hope Horman.

And, YES! We change diapers! 😉

Children

Sunday school for children ages 3–8 is also offered during the 11am worship hour in Trinity Hall. The curriculum is developed by WHC’s Coordinator of Christian Education in conjunction with the Minister and typically includes a lesson from scripture, snack time, and a hands-on-craft or activity to bring it all together. Children are welcome to arrive at the nursery early (10:45am) for free play before Sunday school begins. If your child prefers to stay in the Sanctuary with you, we are absolutely for that too!

In addition to Sunday school, we have a number of church-wide events geared toward fostering a sense of belonging and community among our children.

Easter Egg Hunt | The WHC Children’s Easter Egg Hunt is not to be missed! Our wonderful congregation always gets in on the fun by supplying stuffed Easter eggs for our children to find. Our youth hide the eggs (numbering well over 1,000 in recent years) across our extensive grounds, leaving plenty for children of all ages. A visit from the Easter Bunny himself is always a big draw!

Family Fun Day | In June 2026, we started a new tradition to celebrate dads and their kiddos with a picnic on Father’s Day, complete with inflatables, face-painting, snow cones, and a good old-fashioned pie walk.

Back-to-School Challenge | Every August, WHC issues a special challenge to our children: learn a passage of scripture or prayer by heart. Last year, our children rose to the occasion by memorizing the Fruits of the Spirit, and this year they are taking on The Lord’s Prayer. On the last Sunday of August, children get the chance to recite what they’ve learned and earn a free hot dog at Boonedogs, where the whole congregation joins them for lunch to celebrate. It’s one of our favorite late-summer traditions!

WHC Safari | Our WHC Safaris are held at the end of October. Families gather to hike through the woods at the Iroquois Hunt Club, ending at a church picnic complete with pumpkin carving for our children and teenagers.

Parents’ Night Out | Two nights a year, our children are invited to gather at the church for a night of fun while their parents enjoy a well-deserved evening off. These events are typically three hours long and include dinner, activities, and a movie. Our Christmas Parents’ Night Out even features a visit from an Elf, Santa, and Mrs. Claus!

Christmas Pageant | The WHC Christmas Pageant is one of our most beloved traditions! Each year, a script and songs are chosen for our children to learn during Sunday school and perform on a Sunday in December. It’s a wonderful opportunity for our children to showcase what they’ve learned throughout the year, from the story of the Nativity to the joy of working together.

Youth

Each year, Walnut Hill Church offers a Confirmation class for our middle and high school youth. Led by our minister and Coordinator of Christian Education, this special series of classes guides our young men and women through what it means to grow in faith and dedicate their lives to Christ as members of our church family. A service component is required of all confirmands and we provide several group volunteer opportunities for this purpose.

Confirmation is one of the most meaningful milestones a young person can experience in their walk with God, and we are honored to walk alongside them through it. Check out our 2025-26 Confirmation Curriculum here.

We Would Love for you to visit us!

If you wish, send us a message below with your name, e-mail, the Sunday and time you would like to attend and we will have someone here to greet you. Whether you want someone to meet you or just come on your own,
everyone is welcome.
