The Parables: Stories Jesus Told
September 13th-November 15th, Sundays at 11AM
In Matthew’s Gospel, the disciples ask Jesus, “Why do you speak to the people in parables?” In Luke, they hear one and have to ask him what it meant. In Mark, they approached him and asked about the parables…again. Ever felt that way when reading one? So have we! They were short stories meant to teach, though sometimes it seems even the disciples suspected future generations would be scratching their heads. Join us each Sunday morning at 11AM in person or online this Fall as we we dig into the parables, both the puzzling and the beloved ones, to see what Jesus really wanted to teach us.
Nathaniel Mission Fall Work Day
Saturday, September 19 starting at 9am
From trimming bushes to pulling weeds, sorting donations to packing hygiene bags, there’s a way to pitch in at the work day! All are invited to this opportunity to serve our mission partner that does a wonderful job serving the community in the Versailles Road Corridor every day. 1109 Versailles Road.
Simply show up ready to work for whatever time frame you can give! Thank you!
Ladies’ Lunch at The Thoroughbred Club of America

WHC Ladies, our next Ladies’ Lunch is Wednesday, September 23 at 11:30am at The Thoroughbred Club of America. Dress code is “smart casual,” which is roughly what you’d wear to church on Sunday.

After-School Pizza Party at Tates Creek Community Center
Wednesday, September 23rd at 3:30PM
Please join us at Tates Creek Community Center (3460 Campus Way, Lexington, KY 40517) for our After-School Pizza Party! This initiative supports one of our 2026 goals to deepen engagement with local mission partners. At these events, WHC volunteers will come together to serve pizza and snacks to area children and spend time with students to encourage them through positive, caring engagement We will participate in this outreach every month, creating consistent opportunities to connect and invest in these young lives. We typically need 3-4 volunteers for each event; if you would like to serve, please contact the office or sign up on our Google Form!
WHC Men’s Breakfast
Saturday, September 26th @ 8:30AM
Fire up the griddle—our Men’s Breakfast is back! Join Pastor Shawn and the men of Walnut Hill for a morning of bacon, eggs, and all the breakfast favorites starting at 8:30AM. Bring a friend, pull up a chair, and enjoy good food, good conversation, and great fellowship. Whether you’re catching up on life or debating last night’s game, this is your kind of morning.
All men of the congregation and their friends are welcome. Please RSVP to the office so we know how many mouths we’re feeding!
Sips and Saints: The Correspondent
Tuesday, September 29 @ 6pm
September’s book is The Correspondent by Virginia Evans, a novel told entirely in letters, written by a retired judge in her seventies who has opinions about nearly everyone she writes to, including herself. (Fair warning: it’s a book about regret, and about apologies made later than they should have been. Still, it’s funny in places and it earns its ending.!) We’ll meet at the home of Mary Ellen Fones Schnabel, so watch the newsletter and our Facebook page for details. Bring a beverage or something to share if you’d like, and come ready for good conversation.
Bible 101: No Experience Necessary
Monday, October 5th + 19th @ 10:30AM
Curious about the Bible and where it came from? Been a while since you sat in a study group, or never sat in one at all?
A few folks asked for something like this, so we’re getting it rolling. It’s a casual Bible study where no question is too basic. Bring a Bible if you have one. If you don’t, we have extras.
And no worries if you can’t make every session. Pop in when you can, for as long as you can! Our October 5th meeting will be at the home of Rev. Shawn and AJ Barkley. We’ll let you know about the next one 😉
WHC’s Blessing of the Animals
Sunday, October 11th, 11AM
Our fourth annual Blessing of the Animals will be an abbreviated outdoor service that includes a blessing for every animal there, and time to remember the pets we’ve lost. Everyone is welcome, member or not! Bring chairs, blankets, water, and whatever your furry, feathered, or scaly companion needs. Leashes and carriers are required, and owners handle cleanup.😊
Walking with us later? The Greater Lexington CROP Hunger Walk is that same afternoon, 3 to 5pm at Second Presbyterian and a great way to get in your pet’s daily exercise! See below!
Greater Lexington CROP Hunger Walk @ Second Presbyterian Church
Sunday, October 11th, 3-5PM
Walnut Hill has a Greater Lexington CROP Hunger Walk team, and there’s room on it! Here are three ways to be part of this event:
- Sign up. Join the Walnut Hill Church team! Like J.Lo’s love, it don’t cost a thing and kids and dogs are welcome.
- Give. Donate through our team page. A quarter of what’s raised goes to God’s Pantry Food Bank in Lexington. The rest goes to hunger relief and development work.
- Show up. Meet us at Second Presbyterian at 3pm on October 11.

2026 Walk to End Alzheimer’s @ Lexington Sporting Club Stadium
Sunday, October 18th, 1:30PM
Walnut Hill church family and friends know all too well the impacts of this dreadful disease. Consider marking your calendar to walk with us! All funds raised through the walk further the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer’s Association. This year, we’ll be walking at the Lexington Sporting Club Stadium. The event opens at 1:30PM with a ceremony at 2:30PM and the walk beginning at 3:00PM. Register here and reach out to the office with any questions!
